And in most cases the allowable residual level is virtually zero. Washing water contains detergents or other sanitisers that can essentially completely remove these residues.
The washing equipment not only ensures safety and quality but also increases the product’s shelf-life making them suitable to store for longer time.
SS ENGINEERS & CONSULTANTS are experts in manufacture and supply of vegetables washing lines, salads and fruits processing lines that are custom designed to meet the application from farm to the super supply chains.
Small Scale Vegetable Washing Equipment
By SS Engineers, India
What’s new in SS Engineers? Well, one thing that we’ve recently developed is a small scale vegetable cleaning plant. This plant is designed for small-scale food processors, who want to clean and process the product the hygienic way.
This machine is made by SS Engineers and Consultants, an equipment manufacturing company in INDIA. It is constructed in full stainless steel, with adjustable washing speed.
The rinse conveyor is a versatile machine that can wash, Pre cool and sanitize everything from greens to root crops.
Here is how it works:
Products get dumped through crates into the washing conveyor, the fresh produce passes through the conveyor slowly getting cleaned with air agitation in the water generated through High pressure blowers.
- Low Pressure, High volume pre-soaking, rinses through air agitation allowing loosening of dried debris from the product surface.
- Next a rotating drum which facilitates the produce to get dipped in the water thoroughly with a force allowing it to get completely clean out of all residues and contaminants.
- Finally, the product passes through a final rinse (directed through a pump from the water storage tank equipped with ozone generator) from stationary nozzles mounted above the discharge conveyor.
The product then gets to the end of the line and dumps on to a de-watering screen, which functions through vibration motor. End of the cleaning process
Below mentioned is the temperature range the Fruits and vegetables are to be stored at to increase their shelf life. SS Engineers and Consultants offer you dedicated custom designed solution that meets the highest standards of food processing.
NAME | TEMPERATURE (°C) | RELATIVE HUMIDITY (%) | STORAGE LIFE (days) |
Apple | -1-4 | 90-95 | 30-180 |
Banana | 13-15 | 90-95 | 7-28 |
Cabbage | 0 | 98-100 | 150-180 |
Orange | 0-9 | 85-90 | 56-84 |
Potato | 7-16 | 90-95 | 10-14 |
Mango | 13 | 90-95 | 14-21 |
Carrot | 0 | 95-100 | 14 |
Spinach | 0 | 95-100 | 10-14 |
Okra | 7-10 | 90-95 | 7-10 |
Cucumber | 10-13 | 95 | 10-14 |
Add on accessories:
Water Chiller:
This machine is offered with a water chilling unit, to chill the water to +4 degrees, the produce which is loaded for cleaning will get pre-cooled during the process of washing: Pre-cooling is intended to remove field heat. It is usual ideal feature done during hot days. Pre-cooling slow down the respiration of the produce, minimizes susceptibility to micro-organisms, reduces water loss and reduces load on cooling system at storage or transportation.
Crops like okra, peas, yard long bean and bitter gourd which deteriorate fast, need pre-cooling. Pre-cooling of vegetables through water removes the field heat very quickly. This process is also recommended for the leafy vegetables to retain freshness and texture.
The machine offered by SS Engineers is manufactured as per the GMP norms; it gives access to every part of the machine for easy cleaning and sanitizing every batch before and after its use. The machine is facilititated with a brush at the end of the line to roll the cleaned vegetables gently off the line to the next process.
Ozone water wash
Ozone is a more powerful disinfectant than chlorine, chlorine dioxide or per-acetic acid. It is effective against a wide range of pathogens including bacteria, viruses, cryptosporidium, giardia, etc. More importantly, ozone has a lifetime of only 10- 20 minutes in the water after which time it breaks down to oxygen. Therefore it does not leave behind harmful by products as do chlorine or chlorine dioxide. This prevents the fresh produce from contamination and also allows for easy discharge of the used wash water.

The use of chlorine can lead to contamination of the product with chlorinated chemicals. In fact the European Union has significantly restricted the use of chlorine for fruit and vegetable washing for this reason. Many packagers have switched their disinfection to ozone and have installed ozone generators.
Water Consumption
The washing machine offered by SS Engineers is designed to re circulation the wash water through a series of screens and baffles to settle out the sediment and debris before it goes back for the re-use. Further the machine is featured to filter the water after the use of the day production passing it through sludge removing system to filter the water to 50 microns and settle the same to a sump tank for next day use.
Sludge filtration system:
The polluted water enters the filter via pump and falls directly onto the filter media bed, which is retained in a pool state by an endless steel mesh belt. The water passes through the media which retains the solids and flows directly into the clean tank where it is pumped back to the machine/ settling storage tank.
De-watering Conveyor:
The de-watering screens functions to remove the water from the surface area of the produce after the wash down. The conveyor receives product suspended in water and separates the water from the product and return the water to the collection tray. During the transport along the conveyor the product sheds free water as it passes over the de-watering screen section.
Can also be used for packaged food pouches cooling and washing system
